Its 100-400mm zoom range gives Micro Four Thirds photographers room to frame distant subjects tightly without changing lenses. This interchangeable telephoto lens suits anyone who regularly photographs wildlife, birds or sports, and it can also help you make portraits with a less crowded background. At the shorter end, there's more room to include context; at the long end, you can pick out a bird on a branch or follow action across a field from where you’re standing. It’s also a useful option for events where getting closer isn’t practical. Autofocus makes it a natural fit for moving subjects, though the long reach is especially valuable when your subject is far away. If wildlife and birds are your main subjects, that’s where this zoom’s reach is put to best use.

Specialist Note

400mm lets you frame small, distant subjects closely; on a Micro Four Thirds body, the view corresponds to 800mm on full frame. For birds, I’d start around 1/1000 sec to help freeze movement, then raise ISO if the light calls for it. The maximum aperture narrows from f/4 to f/6.3 as you zoom, so the long end is more demanding in dim conditions; daylight suits it better, especially for wildlife and outdoor sport. If you photograph indoor events, be ready to balance shutter speed and ISO rather than expecting the lens to gather lots of light. It’s a specialised reach tool, and that’s its appeal.
