Samyang AF 60-180mm f/2.8 Sony FE | Flexible portrait reach

Missed expressions at an event can be hard to recover, especially when moving closer would interrupt the moment. The Samyang AF 60-180mm f/2.8 Sony FE gives you a telephoto zoom range for changing your framing from a looser portrait to a tighter candid without changing lenses. It’s an interchangeable autofocus lens for full-frame Sony FE cameras, suited to portrait work and events where people aren’t always in the same place. The constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 lets you keep the same exposure setting as you zoom, and gives you room to use a faster shutter speed when the light is low or your subject is moving. At the shorter end, you can include more of the scene around someone; at the longer end, you can frame more closely from further away. It’s a focused tool for photographing people, rather than a wide-ranging general-purpose zoom.

Specialist Note

The 60mm starting point can feel tight for a group portrait or a small room, but that’s the trade-off for a zoom built around people at a distance. I’d recommend it to someone covering a ceremony, a talk or an event where stepping closer isn’t always practical. For a speaker, try f/2.8 and start around 1/250 sec to help keep gestures sharp; raise ISO if the available light calls for it. The 180mm end lets you make a much tighter frame without moving into the action. Autofocus is useful when expressions change quickly, though I’d still keep an eye on where the focus is landing in a busy scene.
