Laowa 17mm f/4.0 Zero-D Shift - Canon RF (VE1740S-RF)

Laowa 17mm f/4.0 Zero-D Shift - Canon RF (VE1740S-RF) | Frame buildings without tilting the camera

Without a shift lens, you often have to tilt the camera upward to fit a tall building into the frame, which can make its vertical lines appear to converge. The Laowa 17mm f/4.0 Zero-D Shift gives Canon RF photographers another way to compose: keep the camera level and shift the framing to include more of the scene. Its ultra-wide 17mm view is well suited to architecture, from street façades to interiors where space is tight, and it also gives landscape photographers room to include a broad foreground. This is a specialist manual-focus lens for people who want deliberate control over composition, rather than a general-purpose zoom for quick changes between subjects. It’s particularly at home when buildings, straight edges or carefully arranged landscape elements matter in the finished frame.

Framing architecture

For a tall façade, begin with the camera level and compose the building using the shift movement. That keeps the camera’s angle from being the thing that makes the walls lean in the picture. The wide view also helps when you can’t step far back, though close surroundings can still make composition busy; take time to check the edges of the frame.
