It suits photographers working with black-and-white images who want to influence how colours translate into shades of grey. Yellow filtration can help separate a blue sky from clouds, for example, while the exact effect depends on the colours and light in the scene. That makes it most useful when you want to make a deliberate tonal adjustment rather than simply protect a lens. The square format is relevant when your filter setup is designed around 4x4 filters; it’s not a general-purpose round screw-on filter. If you work in colour, expect the filter to affect colour rendering too. This is a specific tool for shaping the look of an image, so it’s worth choosing for the effect you want rather than leaving it on for every shot.

Specialist Note

The Tiffen 44Y12 is best at giving black-and-white photographs a deliberate yellow-filter tonal shift. Its Yellow 12 designation tells you the filter’s colour, which is useful when you want to adjust how coloured parts of a scene appear as grey; try it on a blue sky with clouds to bring more separation into the tones. The 4x4 format matters just as much in practice: choose it when your filter arrangement calls for that square size, rather than expecting a round filter to fit. I’d use it for considered monochrome work, not as an always-on filter. The result depends on the colours in front of the camera, so the same filter won’t give every scene the same contrast.

Technical Specifications

Brand: Tiffen

Model: 44Y12

Format: 4x4

Filter type: Yellow 12
