A Guide on The Importance of Using a Lens Hood

A lens hood, or in Dutch 'zonnekap', is an essential accessory for a photographer. It shields the front lens from oblique light rays, thus preventing aperture spots and flare, which often leads to loss of contrast and improper light measurement. Because of this, the hood ensures avoidance of unpleasant reflections on your lenses and filters — aspects that can cause your photographs to have washed-out colors.

It is wise for photographers to continuously use a lens hood, even indoors. This is due to the fact that the light it blocks is not only sunlight but all types of light, including indoor and city lighting. Hence, a lens hood plays a significant role in both, indoor and outdoor photography.

This particularly applies to the Nikon AF 50mm F/1.4 and F/1.8 lenses.
