Meyer Optik Görlitz Primoplan 75mm f/1.9 II C-EF-Mount
Meyer Optik Görlitz Primoplan 75mm f/1.9 II C-EF-Mount | Bright manual focus for considered portraits
The Meyer Optik Görlitz Primoplan 75mm f/1.9 II C-EF-Mount pairs a bright maximum aperture with manual focusing, inviting you to place focus yourself rather than rely on autofocus. It suits Canon EF users who enjoy that deliberate approach and want a dedicated portrait focal length. At 75mm, you can frame a face from a comfortable distance; at f/1.9, a shallow depth of field can help draw attention to your subject. The lens is genuinely at home with portraits and event moments where you have time to focus carefully. Manual focus makes it less suited to fast, unpredictable action, so it rewards timing more than quick reactions. On a Canon APS-C (EF-S) body, its framing corresponds to 120mm, giving you a tighter view that works especially well for close portrait compositions.
Specialist Note
New owners sometimes expect a portrait lens to take care of focus for them; this Primoplan asks you to place it yourself, which can be a real advantage when you want the eye—not the background—to hold attention. I’d start a portrait at f/1.9, focus on the nearer eye, and take a moment to check that focus before the expression changes. For an event portrait, the 75mm view helps you make a composed frame, while the wide aperture is useful when the room is dim. The honest trade-off is manual focusing on moving people: it’s better suited to a willing subject than a fast, chaotic moment.
