SmallRig 6706 L-Shaped Mount Plate For Sony Alpha 7R VI
SmallRig 6706 L-Shaped Mount Plate For Sony Alpha 7R VI | Shift framing on a tripod
Its right-angle shape sets the SmallRig 6706 apart from a flat tripod plate: it’s made to support a change between horizontal and vertical framing while the camera stays on a tripod. This is a specialist accessory for owners of the Sony Alpha 7R VI who regularly switch orientation for portraits, vertical video or tall subjects. The plate’s L shape is the key to that use; rather than taking the camera off the support to reorient it, you can use the plate’s side or base as the mounting face. That can make framing changes less disruptive when you’re working from a fixed tripod position. It’s a focused piece of kit, not a general-purpose camera accessory, so it makes most sense if you often need both orientations. If you mainly shoot in one orientation, a simpler plate may be all you need.
Where it helps
For a portrait-oriented frame, the L-shaped form gives you a way to mount the camera on its side while keeping the tripod setup in use. That’s handy for a vertical portrait or a tall architectural subject when you want to preserve your position and adjust the composition from there. For horizontal framing, use the plate’s base as the mounting face. The benefit is practical rather than elaborate: you can change how the camera sits on the tripod to suit the frame. This plate is intended for the Sony Alpha 7R VI, so its relevance is specific to that camera.
Specialist Note
The SmallRig 6706 is best at letting your Sony Alpha 7R VI switch between horizontal and vertical tripod framing. The L shape is what makes that possible: it offers a mounting face along the camera’s base and side, so you can reorient the camera without removing it from the tripod setup. I’d consider it if you make both landscape and portrait compositions from a fixed position, especially for portraits or vertical video. Its fit is specifically named for the Alpha 7R VI, which keeps the choice straightforward for owners of that model. One practical limit: this is a mount plate, not a tripod head or a complete support system.
