The Tiffen 448Y2 is a 4x4 8 Yellow 2 filter for photographers who want to make that tonal choice deliberately, especially when working in black and white. It’s most useful when you want to adjust how blue skies, clouds or other colours translate into grey, rather than relying on the camera’s conversion alone. A yellow filter can give a blue sky more separation from clouds, while its effect on other colours will depend on the scene. That makes it worth considering for landscapes and portraits where tonal relationships matter. The 4x4 format is a practical detail to keep in mind when planning your filter setup. This isn’t a UV filter; its defining feature is the yellow colour stated in the product name.

Specialist Note

For a black-and-white landscape with a broad blue sky, I’d consider the 8 Yellow 2 before deciding how I want the scene to read in grey. Yellow can add separation between sky and clouds, so use it when you want that distinction to come through without making the filter choice the whole story. The 4x4 format is worth planning around: it’s a square filter, so think about your filter arrangement before heading out rather than treating it like a small lens-mounted accessory. It also suits portraits when you want to shape the tonal rendering of skin. If you mainly need UV protection, this is the wrong filter; choose it for its yellow-filter effect.

Technical Specifications

Brand: Tiffen

Model: 448Y2

Format: 4x4

Filter designation: 8 Yellow 2

Filter type: Yellow filter
