The B+W Gray 102 is for photographers who want to control how movement and depth of field appear in their images, rather than accept the exposure settings dictated by strong daylight. It’s particularly useful for smoothing the look of moving water, giving clouds a sense of motion, or making portraits outdoors with a wider aperture. Its gray ND role is to reduce light, not to create a deliberate color effect. The results depend on the scene and the exposure you choose: for a long exposure, meter the scene and lengthen the shutter time, then review the image and adjust. For portraits, use the aperture you want and let the camera’s meter guide your exposure. It’s a focused tool for shaping exposure, rather than an effect filter.

Specialist Note

First-time ND-filter owners sometimes keep their usual exposure settings and expect the filter itself to create a visible change. With the Gray 102, treat it as a way to make a different exposure possible: meter again, then choose the slower shutter time or wider aperture that suits the scene. The 72 mm marking is the detail to match to the filter thread on your lens; the ND designation tells you its job is light reduction. For softened water, lengthen the shutter time and check the result; for a daylight portrait, use the aperture you want and adjust exposure accordingly. The exact shutter time depends on the available light, so take a fresh meter reading rather than assuming one setting will work everywhere.

Technical Specifications

Brand: B+W

Product designation: Gray 102

Filter type: ND

Size: 72 mm
