That’s useful when you want both distances to matter in the same composition, rather than choosing one and letting the other fall out of focus. The Schneider CF Diopter Split is made for photographers and cinematographers working with that deliberate, divided focus effect. Its 138mm drop format is part of the design, so it’s aimed at setups that use this size of drop-in filter. Use it for a close detail paired with a face, or foreground texture set against a more distant subject. The result depends on how you arrange the subjects and frame the split: this is a specific optical effect, not a general-purpose filter for changing every shot.

Specialist Note

Photographers building a frame around a close foreground detail and a more distant subject are the ones I’d point toward this Schneider. The +1 diopter gives the near portion its close-focus effect; place your detail there, then keep the farther subject in the clear portion of the split. The 138mm drop format matters when you’re choosing a filter for a setup built around that size. I’d try it for a hand or object close to camera against a person farther back, and adjust the framing until the split sits along a natural boundary. It’s a purposeful effect, so it won’t make the whole frame uniformly sharp.

Technical Specifications

Product: Schneider CF Diopter Split

Diopter strength: +1

Generation: GEN2

Format: 138mm drop
