It’s a flash trigger and transmitter for photographers who want to work with flash away from the camera, including portrait and product shooters. The transmitter’s job is to trigger the flash; it doesn’t shape the light for you. That leaves the look of the photograph to your flash placement and the way you light the subject. For a portrait, moving the flash away from the camera gives you more scope to decide where light falls across a face. For a product photograph, it lets you work with light coming from a direction other than the camera. This set is best suited to those straightforward off-camera flash setups, where you want to fire a flash while working at the camera rather than beside the light.

Specialist Note

The transmitter’s place at the camera end of the setup is the useful detail: it gives you a way to trigger an off-camera flash while you work from the camera position. I’d consider it for a simple portrait with one flash, adjusting where that light falls to shape the face, or for a product shot where light from the side brings out the subject’s form. The set is a trigger, not a light-shaping accessory, so the flash position still does the creative work. It suits photographers who already have an off-camera flash setup in mind and want a transmitter for portraits or product photography.

Technical Specifications

Product kind: flash trigger / transmitter

Typical use: firing off-camera flashes for portraits and product shots

Product name: SMDV Mini SYNC Set
