En 1984, Minolta a présenté son appareil photo compact entièrement automatique Minolta AF-E. Dans la gamme Minolta de 1984 (composée de l'AF-C, de l'AF-S et de l'AF-Sv), il s'agissait de « l'appareil photo du peuple », avec un chargement facile, un flash automatique et un objectif 1:3,5 f=35 mm moins avancé, focalisé par un système de mise au point automatique infrarouge actif.
