VDM Portretfotografie

VDM Portretfotografie | A book focused on making portraits

For anyone interested in making portraits, VDM Portretfotografie is a book centred on portrait photography. It suits readers who want to spend time with this particular kind of image-making, whether they’re starting to explore it or already take portraits and want to think more carefully about their approach. A portrait is more than a record of someone’s appearance: the way a person is presented is what gives the image its character. That’s the kind of subject this title puts in focus. If portraiture is the area you want to explore, a book dedicated to it gives you a starting point that’s more specific than a general photography title. The honest point is that the title tells you the subject, not the precise method or topics inside. Choose it for its focus on portraits, rather than for a particular technique or promised result.

Why focus on portrait photography?

Portraits can be made for very different reasons: to remember someone, to show something about their personality, or simply to create an image with a particular feel. Each purpose can lead to a different way of working. Thinking about the person in front of the camera, and what you want the finished portrait to say, is a useful place to begin. This book’s subject makes it relevant to readers drawn to that process. It’s also a more considered pick than buying a title on photography in general when portraits are the images you’re most curious about. The name is in Dutch, so readers looking for a book specifically titled around portrait photography may find it straightforward to identify on the shelf. If you’re choosing based on a particular technique, though, the title alone doesn’t tell you whether that’s covered.
