DZOFILM Arles 135mm FF/VV Prime Cine Lens (PL Mount, feet): Frame distant subjects with cinematic control

Without a dedicated long focal length, tighter interview framing often means moving the camera closer; the DZOFILM Arles 135mm FF/VV Prime Cine Lens gives filmmakers a 135mm short-telephoto prime for more deliberate composition. It’s a manual-focus cine lens for video and filmmaking, with an approximately 18° angle of view that keeps attention on a face, a small detail or action farther from the camera. For interviews, that narrower view helps keep distracting surroundings out of the frame. For close shots of objects or performers, the 135mm perspective supports a composed, selective look. Its T1.8 maximum aperture is useful for scenes lit with available light, and it gives you scope to separate a subject from the background with shallow depth of field. That’s particularly appealing for dramatic close-ups or a quiet, intimate interview image. The 16-blade iris is another distinctive part of the look: out-of-focus highlights take on a rounded, smooth character rather than a visibly angular shape. This is a prime lens with a specific role, not an all-purpose focal length for every setup. Put it to work when you want a tight frame, a controlled background and cine-style manual operation; its 135mm view rewards considered camera placement and is especially suited to planned shots rather than rapidly changing wide coverage.

Optics and handling

  • T1.8 maximum aperture: The fast maximum aperture suits low-light scenes and makes shallow depth of field available for close-ups and interviews. It also gives the iris a broad range for controlling exposure and background separation.
  • 16-blade iris: The high blade count contributes to smooth, rounded out-of-focus highlights. That quality is especially noticeable when small lights appear behind a subject.
  • 270° focus rotation: The long turn gives a focus puller fine control over manual adjustments. It’s useful for measured shifts between a foreground detail and a person in the same shot.
  • 77° iris rotation: The iris ring’s rotation is shorter than the focus throw, supporting direct aperture adjustments during a setup. The separate cine-style ring keeps focus and exposure controls distinct.
  • 14 elements in 12 groups: This multi-element optical design is the basis of the lens’s image formation. It’s a useful specification to have when building a matched cine-lens package.
  • Floating elements: The floating optical design minimises focus breathing during focus changes. That matters in a visible rack focus, where a shifting frame can distract from the change in subject attention.
  • Aspherical elements: These elements are part of the optical design for controlling chromatic aberration and supporting performance in low light. They contribute to the lens’s considered cine-oriented construction.
  • 86mm filter thread: The front thread takes 86mm screw-in filters. It gives you a defined filter size to plan for when preparing filtration for a shot.

Specialist Note

For a low-light interview, I’d start by opening this 135mm lens to T1.8 and keeping the frame tight on the speaker. That combination is useful when you want a soft background and don’t want the room to dominate the shot. I also like the 270° focus rotation for a deliberate rack focus: there’s a generous turn for guiding attention from a foreground object to a face. The floating elements are a welcome detail here, since they minimise the change in framing as you pull focus. I’d recommend the Arles 135mm to a filmmaker building controlled portraits, close-up inserts or carefully composed narrative shots. One point to plan around is its narrow, long-lens role: it’s not the prime I’d reach for to cover a whole room. Pair it with a wider focal length when a scene needs both close detail and broad coverage.

On your camera

This version uses a PL mount and is specified for full-frame coverage, so it belongs on a camera with a compatible PL mount and a full-frame sensor. Focus is manual, with the lens’s focus adjustments made at the ring rather than through autofocus. That suits film and video setups where a focus puller or operator controls focus as part of the shot. The title specifies feet, useful when working from focus marks in imperial units.
