It suits photographers using a lens with a 49mm filter thread who want to manage motion or keep a wider aperture without changing the scene’s lighting. Moving water can take on a softer look, while passing clouds show more movement. You can also use the light reduction to retain a chosen aperture in daylight rather than stopping down as far. Its fixed strength makes the effect straightforward to plan around: meter the scene, then compensate by three stops when setting your exposure. This filter is best when that measured reduction is enough; it won’t, by itself, turn every bright daytime scene into a very long exposure.

Specialist Note

Photographers who frame streams, fountains or drifting clouds can use this filter to give movement a little more time in the frame. Its 49mm size is for lenses with a matching filter thread, so it’s worth checking the lens marking before choosing it. The ND 0.9 rating means a three-stop reduction: for example, if your meter reads 1/125 sec, keeping the same aperture and ISO brings you to about 1/15 sec. That can soften moving water without changing your composition. It also suits outdoor portraits when you want a wider aperture in bright light. One honest limit: three stops is a moderate reduction, not a shortcut to very long daylight exposures.

Technical Specifications

Brand: Formatt Hitech

Filter diameter: 49mm

ND value: 0.9 (3 stops)
