This hood is made for that specific zoom, so it’s a straightforward match for photographers who already use the lens. It’s especially handy outdoors, where bright light from just beyond the edge of the frame can reduce contrast in a picture. The HB-39 is black, giving the lens a discreet finish. It won’t change the zoom’s focal length or aperture; its job is to shade the lens from light coming in at an angle. If you often shoot with bright light just outside your composition, this is a simple accessory to keep close by.

Using the HB-39

Use the hood when a bright window, lamp or low sun is near the edge of your composition. It can help with off-axis light, but it won’t remove flare from a light source that’s actually in the picture. A small change in your shooting angle may still be needed.

Specialist Note

The Nikon HB-39 is the dedicated hood for shading the AF-S DX 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 from stray light. If that’s the zoom you use, I’d reach for it on bright streets or when a window or low sun sits just outside the frame; keep the light source beyond the edge and the hood can help preserve contrast. The f/3.5-5.6 in the lens name is a useful reminder that this is a specific lens match, not a hood to choose by appearance. Its black colour keeps the setup understated. It won’t remove flare from a sun in the picture, so angle still matters.

Technical Specifications

Product: Nikon HB-39 Lens Hood

Compatible lens: AF-S DX 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6

Colour: Black
