It’s made for filmmakers and photographers who want to soften the image in-camera rather than rely entirely on post-production. The Soft/FX effect is useful for portraits and close-ups, where a little diffusion can take the edge off fine detail while keeping the image recognisable. Its 1/4 strength gives you a measured starting point when you want a softer finish without choosing a more pronounced effect. The 4x4 format suits a workflow already built around filters of that size, so it’s a considered addition for camera crews and image-makers who shape their look with filtration. Keep in mind that softening is a creative choice: if crisp, fine detail is the priority throughout the frame, this isn’t the filter to reach for.

Specialist Note

Once this filter is in the shot, its softening effect becomes part of the image rather than a look you add later. I’d suggest the 1/4 strength for portrait close-ups when you want a gentler rendering of detail, but still want the face to read clearly. The 4x4 format makes sense if your working setup is already arranged for filters of that size; it’s a straightforward way to bring this particular effect into that workflow. It suits filmmakers and photographers making a deliberate, softer image. My honest caveat: if your brief depends on every fine edge staying crisp, the Soft/FX look may be too much, even at this strength.

Technical Specifications

Brand: Tiffen

Model: 44SFX14

Format: 4x4

Filter type: Soft/FX

Strength: 1/4
