It’s a UV filter in a square 4x4 format, suited to photographers and filmmakers whose filter setup is built around that size. In scenes where ultraviolet light contributes to haze, filtering it can help keep faraway subjects from looking as washed out. The effect depends on the conditions, so it won’t remove haze caused by the atmosphere itself. This is a focused option for adding UV filtration to a compatible square-filter workflow, rather than a general-purpose filter with several effects. If you already work with 4x4 filters and want UV filtration in that format, the Tiffen gives you a clear, specific purpose to build into your setup.

Specialist Note

The Tiffen 44UV17 4x4 UV17 Filter is best for adding UV filtration to a square-filter workflow. Its 4x4 format makes it relevant when your existing setup is designed around filters of that size; it isn’t a round screw-in filter. The UV17 designation identifies this as a UV filter, so I’d consider it for outdoor landscape scenes where distant details can look veiled by UV haze. Keep it in the 4x4 setup while you frame those views, and judge the result in the conditions you’re shooting. It suits photographers who already use square filters and want this particular kind of filtration. One honest limit: it can’t clear haze that comes from the atmosphere itself.

Technical Specifications

Brand: Tiffen

Model: 44UV17

Format: 4x4

Filter type: UV17
