Tokina combines a neutral-density rating with an IRND designation, making this a specific filtration tool for image-makers who need to reduce light and are considering infrared filtration as part of the setup. The 1.2 density corresponds to a four-stop reduction, useful when the scene is brighter than the exposure you want. You can keep your ISO and aperture where you want them and adjust shutter speed instead, or use the reduction to open the aperture while holding exposure. This is a fixed-strength filter, so its appeal is predictability rather than on-the-fly adjustment. Choose it when four stops is the reduction you need; for changing conditions, you’ll need a different filtration plan.

Specialist Note

For cinematographers filming in bright daylight who want to keep a wider aperture, the Tokina’s 1.2 density gives you a defined four-stop reduction. For example, if your exposure calls for f/16, you can open to f/4 while keeping ISO and shutter speed unchanged. The 4×5.65 format is the detail to pay attention to: it suits a workflow already built around that rectangular filter size. I’d consider it for exterior scenes where you want to hold a chosen exposure approach rather than stop down. One honest limitation: 1.2 is a single strength, so it won’t adapt on its own when the light changes.

Technical Specifications

Brand: Tokina

Format: 4×5.65

Filter type: IRND

Density: 1.2
