westcott-fj80-magnetic-grid-gel-pack
Westcott FJ80 Magnetic Grid & Gel Pack

Westcott FJ80 Magnetic Grid & Gel Pack | Direct light and add colour

Westcott FJ80 Magnetic Grid & Gel Pack pairs a magnetic grid with gels for photographers who want more say over the direction and colour of their light. A grid is used to narrow light’s spread, helping keep it on a chosen part of a scene instead of spilling widely. Gels change the colour of light, adding a coloured accent or shifting the mood of a frame. This pack is most relevant when you’re deliberately shaping a small area of light and want colour to play a part too. The grid and gels serve different purposes, so you can think about where the light falls and how it looks as separate creative choices. It’s a focused lighting accessory, rather than a general description of a complete lighting setup.

For a portrait, still life or tabletop scene, you might use a grid to keep light off nearby areas, then bring in a gel when a colour accent suits the image. Those are examples of the kinds of effects grids and gels are commonly used to create, not a promise of one particular result. Placement, subject and surrounding light all affect the finished frame. Start with the effect you want, then adjust the light and assess the result in your scene. If you’re comparing lighting accessories, the product name gives you the essentials here: a magnetic grid and gels, in a pack associated with the FJ80 name.

This will make most sense to someone who enjoys making deliberate lighting choices, rather than leaving light broad and unshaped. A grid can help keep attention on a specific part of the composition; a gel can make the light itself part of the colour palette. The useful question is what you want to change in your picture: the spread of light, its colour, or both. That gives you a practical starting point for deciding whether this accessory suits the effect you have in mind.

Technical Specifications

Product: Westcott FJ80 Magnetic Grid & Gel Pack

Product type: Magnetic grid and gel pack

Category: Accessories > Softbox > Grid > Snoot
