Meyer Optik Görlitz Biotar 58mm f/1.5 II N
Meyer Optik Görlitz Biotar 58mm f/1.5 II N | Manual control for considered portraits
For portraits with a softly separated subject, the Meyer Optik Görlitz Biotar 58mm f/1.5 II N gives you a fast standard-prime lens and manual control over focus. Its 58mm focal length is suited to portrait work, while the maximum aperture of f/1.5 lets you work with a shallow depth of field when you want the person in focus to draw attention. This lens suits photographers who enjoy setting focus themselves and taking time to compose, rather than relying on autofocus. Use it for individual portraits where you can guide your subject and refine the framing, or for a quieter portrait session in available light. The f/1.5 maximum aperture gives you room to work with less light, though careful focusing matters when depth of field is shallow. It’s a focused tool for deliberate portrait-making, rather than a lens for fast, unpredictable action.
Specialist Note
The 58mm focal length gives portraits a considered, close-up feel without pushing you into an extremely tight framing. With the aperture opened to f/1.5, you can let the background soften and keep attention on your subject; take your time placing focus on the eyes, because the shallow focus demands care. I’d use it for a posed individual portrait or a calm available-light session, where you can make small adjustments instead of chasing quick movement. Manual focus is part of the experience here, and also its limitation: it asks for your attention. If you enjoy that deliberate way of working, this Biotar gives you useful control over the portrait’s focus and feel.
