The B+W UV-IR Cut 486 MRC Basic 77 is designed to cut both, making it relevant when you want those parts of the spectrum filtered at the lens rather than addressed later in your workflow. It suits photographers whose setup calls for UV and IR filtering and uses a 77-size filter. The point here is specific: it’s a UV-IR cut filter, not simply a filter described as UV in the category. That distinction matters if you’re choosing by the light you want filtered. The name also identifies it as the Basic version of B+W’s 486 filter designation. If your concern is visible-light colour balance, this filter isn’t a substitute for setting white balance to suit the light.

Specialist Note

Does the B+W UV-IR Cut 486 MRC Basic 77 filter infrared as well as UV? Yes—that’s exactly what its name says it’s designed to do. I’d point it out to someone who specifically needs both parts of the spectrum cut, rather than someone just looking for a general-purpose filter. The 77 in the name is the size to match in your filter setup, so it’s useful to have that number to hand when choosing. For a setup where UV and IR filtering is the goal, use it at the lens while making the exposure; it won’t correct a visible-light colour cast, so set white balance for the scene separately.

Technical Specifications

Brand: B+W

Filter type: UV filter

Designation: UV-IR Cut 486 MRC Basic 77
