Its 55mm size is for a lens with a matching 55mm filter thread; the black diffusion effect can add a subtle glow around strong light sources while taking some bite out of contrast. That makes it worth considering for portraits, evening scenes with point lights, or video where a very crisp digital look feels too hard. The result depends on the light and subject, so it can be understated in soft, even lighting and more visible around bright highlights. This is a creative filter, not a neutral-density filter: choose it for the character it brings to an image, rather than to control exposure or enable a slower shutter speed. If you prefer every edge to look sharply defined, this softer rendering may not suit every frame.

Specialist Note

Bright points can look harsh in a portrait or night scene, and this filter gives you a way to soften their presence without changing the subject. The 55mm size means it belongs on a lens with a matching filter thread, so check the marking on the lens before choosing it. Its black diffusion character is the reason to use it: try it for a portrait with a bright light in the background, or for evening video where you want highlights to feel less crisp. I’d keep it off when fine detail and clean edges matter most; diffusion is a deliberate look, and the lighting determines how strongly it shows.

Technical Specifications

Brand: JJC

Model: F-BD55-2

Filter size: 55mm

Filter type: Black diffusion
