It suits photographers who make prints with Multigrade paper and want to adjust print contrast using a filter at the enlarger. Rather than settling for one contrast level, you can choose a filter to shape how tones appear in the finished print. That makes the set useful when a negative needs a little more separation, or when you want a gentler tonal result. It’s a practical darkroom tool for people who enjoy making decisions at the printing stage, one sheet at a time. The square format gives you a clear size to work with when setting up your enlarger; the filters are intended for printing, not for changing the look of a scene during capture. The supplier lists the colour as black.

Specialist Note

At the enlarger, while a test print is drying nearby, this set gives you options for refining the next sheet. I like that it brings twelve filters together: you can compare different contrast choices as you work, instead of treating every negative as if it needs the same approach. Each filter is 8.9 × 8.9 cm, a useful size to keep in mind when arranging your printing setup. For a flat-looking print, try a filter choice that gives the tones more separation; for a softer result, choose one that moderates it, then judge the outcome on a test strip. This is for the darkroom stage, so it won’t alter contrast in a camera image before printing.

Technical Specifications

Brand: Ilford

Product type: Multigrade filter set

Number of filters: 12

Filter size: 8.9 × 8.9 cm

Colour: Black
