The Manfrotto Metal Chain for Expan is part of an Expan drive set for one background roll, with a load capacity of up to 10kg. It gives portrait and product studios a direct way to adjust the background’s height while the support legs stay in place. That’s useful when a subject or product needs a different amount of background in the frame, or when you’re switching between compositions during a shoot. It also suits a fixed studio setup where a roll is used repeatedly and adjusting it from the chain is more convenient than repositioning the stands. The set is made for background tubes up to 80mm in diameter, and its expanding section adjusts from 46mm to 78mm to fit the tube. Those measurements matter when matching the Expan to the roll already in your studio. The metal chain is the key distinction here: it provides the control for changing the background position, rather than requiring you to lower the support legs. It’s a straightforward studio accessory, and its value is in that specific job.

Highlights

Metal chain control: The chain is included with the Expan drive set and is used to adjust the studio background. This gives the operator a way to change the roll’s position without lowering the support legs, which is useful when the stands are already set for a shoot.

For one background roll: The set is specified for a single roll, keeping its role clear in a studio setup. It’s intended to control one mounted background at a time, rather than act as a general-purpose support for multiple rolls.

Expands from 46mm to 78mm: The Expan section has an adjustable diameter across this range. That adjustment accommodates the supported roll by expanding inside its tube, so the drive set can grip the tube across the stated size range.

Fits tubes up to 80mm: The compatible tube diameter goes up to 80mm. This is a useful measurement to compare with the background roll in your studio, since the drive set is made for tubes within that maximum diameter.

Aluminium-alloy construction: The set is made from a lightweight aluminium alloy. The material keeps the drive assembly’s weight down while providing a solid structure for its studio background role; the stated weight for the complete set is 2kg.

Background height adjustment: The chain-driven Expan changes the position of the roll without requiring the support legs to be lowered. That’s especially handy when the support stands need to remain at their working height between background adjustments.

What's Included

Manfrotto 046MCB Expan with Metal Chain

Technical Specifications

Brand: Manfrotto

Model: 046MCB

Type: Expan background drive set with metal chain

Roll capacity: 1 background roll

Maximum load: 10kg

Compatible tube diameter: Up to 80mm

Expander diameter range: 46–78mm

Material: Aluminium alloy

Weight: 2kg for the set
