Its 1/8 strength is suited to photographers and filmmakers who want to soften the appearance of fine detail without making the image feel heavily diffused. The 4x4 format gives you a square filter to work with in your setup, while the Soft/FX name identifies the effect it’s designed to create. It’s a considered option when you want faces to look a little less crisp and clinical, but still want the scene to read clearly. The effect is intentionally restrained, so it won’t deliver a dramatic, hazy transformation; it’s better suited to a light touch. Choose it when that softer character is part of the picture you have in mind, rather than as a general-purpose UV filter.

Specialist Note

The broad, square 4×4 format gives this filter a distinct place in a setup: it’s a large-format filter, rather than a small screw-in disc. I’d consider the 1/8 strength when you want a gentle Soft/FX look for a portrait or a close-up, where a little softening can make the image feel less hard-edged. Keep the effect in mind as you frame: it’s for a restrained change in rendering, not a strong, misty look. This suits photographers and filmmakers who want that softer character while keeping the image legible. If you want an obvious diffusion effect, this light strength may be too subtle.

Technical Specifications

Brand: Tiffen

Filter type: Soft/FX

Strength: 1/8

Format: 4x4
