Its optical purpose is to control polarized reflections and glare, which can help reveal more detail in reflective surfaces and add definition to a blue sky when the light is at a suitable angle. The 45POL suits photographers working with a 4x5 filter format who want to manage reflected light in landscapes, architectural scenes or photographs involving glass and water. The result depends on the relationship between the camera, subject and light, so the filter won’t remove every reflection or give the same effect from every viewpoint. It’s a focused option for photographers who need a polarizer in this format, rather than a general-purpose filter for changing exposure or focus.

Specialist Note

Landscape photographers working with broad scenes, and photographers dealing with reflections from glass or water, are the people I’d point toward the Tiffen 45POL. Its 4x5 format makes it a natural fit for a workflow using filters in that size. As a polarizer, it’s there to reduce reflected glare; for a stronger effect on a blue sky, aim roughly 90 degrees from the sun and adjust the filter’s orientation while judging the view. One honest limitation: polarization changes with angle, so a wide sky may not darken evenly from edge to edge. That’s worth keeping in mind when composing.

Technical Specifications

Brand: Tiffen

Model: 45POL

Format: 4x5

Filter type: Polarizer
