Samyang 85mm f/1.4 AF Sony FE | Portraits with beautifully soft backgrounds

For portraits with a clearly defined subject and a softly blurred background, an 85mm lens gives you room to frame people without standing too close. The Samyang 85mm f/1.4 AF Sony FE is a short telephoto prime for full-frame Sony FE cameras, with autofocus and a bright maximum aperture of f/1.4. It’s especially well suited to portrait sessions and events, where you may want a natural-looking head-and-shoulders view or a little separation from a busy setting. Its 29° angle of view keeps the frame focused on your subject rather than the whole scene. At an event, autofocus helps you keep attention on the moment while you compose; for portraits, f/1.4 gives you the option to work with a softer background. It’s a focused choice for people photography, rather than a lens meant to cover every kind of subject.

Specialist Note

This 85mm makes flattering, tightly framed portraits easier without having to crowd the person you’re photographing. On a full-frame Sony FE camera, the focal length gives you space to work, while f/1.4 can draw attention to the eyes and let a distracting background fall gently out of focus. For an event portrait, try f/1.4 and a shutter speed around 1/250 sec for people who are moving a little; raise ISO if the light calls for it. It suits portrait photographers and event shooters who want autofocus with that bright-aperture look. One thing to keep in mind: at f/1.4, focus needs care, especially if your subject moves.
