The defining choice is the 15mm focal length: it’s made to take in a broad scene in one frame. This Laowa is an ultra-wide prime for full-frame Leica L cameras, with an estimated 111° angle of view. That wide perspective suits landscape photographers who want foreground and surroundings together, and architecture shooters working with large buildings or interiors. Manual focus makes it a considered tool for subjects that don’t move much, where you can take time to set focus before composing. Its maximum aperture is f/5, so it’s better suited to available light than to dim scenes where you need a faster lens. If you use an APS-C L-mount body, the 15mm focal length gives a roughly 22.5mm full-frame equivalent field of view. It’s a straightforward option when a wide frame matters more than a bright maximum aperture.

Specialist Note

At 15mm, moving the camera just a little can change how much foreground fills the frame, so I’d settle the camera position before fine-tuning focus. For a landscape, try placing a nearby rock or plant low in the composition to give the wide view a clear point of entry. With architecture, keep the camera level when you want building lines to remain upright. Manual focus suits this slower, deliberate approach.
