This is a polarizing filter for photographers who want more control over reflections in a scene, rather than a filter intended to change colour or add a special effect. It’s most useful with reflective surfaces such as water and glass, and can also help give a blue sky more presence. The effect depends on the angle of the light, so it’s something to adjust while composing, not a fixed look applied equally to every frame. If you photograph landscapes, buildings or everyday scenes through windows, the CPL format gives you a way to manage glare at the lens. It’s a straightforward option when you need a 52 mm polarizing filter and want to judge the result as you work.

Specialist Note

At the harbour in late afternoon, sunlight skims across the water and the reflections compete with the boats. This is where a CPL earns its place: turn the filter as you look through the camera and watch the glare change, stopping when you can see the balance of water and reflected light you want. The 52 mm size makes this a match for a lens that takes 52 mm filters, so it’s worth checking the size marked on the lens or its cap. I’d recommend it to someone who photographs water, shop windows or bright skies and likes to make that adjustment while framing. One honest point: a polarizer reduces the light reaching the camera, so in dim conditions you may need a slower shutter speed or higher ISO.

Technical Specifications

Brand: B+W

Model: Basic CPL MRC 52

Filter type: Polarizing filter

Filter size: 52 mm
