The Mofage Filter Insert Black Mist 1/8 is an insert filter for use with the Mofage POCO adapter, sold separately. Its Black Mist effect reduces highlight intensity and lowers overall contrast, bringing bright and dark tones into a gentler balance for a more cinematic look. That softer rendering is useful for portrait work, where it smooths the appearance of wrinkles and other skin irregularities, and for fashion or beauty images where a less stark finish is welcome. It also suits scenes with bright points of light: those highlights become less dominant in the frame. Unlike traditional diffusion or soft-focus filters, this mist effect retains detail with minimal loss, so the image keeps its definition while its light feels softer. It’s a focused creative tool for photographers who want to change the character of light rather than add a conventional sharpness or colour effect.

Optics and handling

Black Mist 1/8 strength: This light diffusion strength softens the rendition without turning the image into a strong soft-focus effect. It’s a restrained option when you want a gentler look while keeping the subject recognisable.

Reduced highlight intensity: Bright areas become less pronounced, so point highlights draw less attention from the rest of the frame. This is useful when you want a softer presentation of light.

Lower overall contrast: The filter reduces contrast across the image, bringing the relationship between bright and dark areas into a more balanced range. That change contributes to its film-like character.

Detail-conscious diffusion: Mist filtration retains detail with minimal loss compared with traditional diffusion or soft-focus filters. The effect softens the image’s feel without relying on broad blur.

Portrait and beauty rendering: The softened look smooths the appearance of wrinkles and other uneven skin texture. That makes the insert relevant for fashion and beauty work as well as general portraiture.

Specialist Note

At a beauty portrait setup, I’d start with the 1/8 strength when the aim is softer light without a pronounced soft-focus look. The Black Mist effect reduces the punch of highlights and lowers contrast, which gives skin a gentler rendering while keeping the image’s detail largely intact. I’d use it for close portrait or fashion work where bright highlights and visible skin texture feel too stark; the same softer highlight treatment also suits a scene with bright points of light. It needs the Mofage POCO adapter, so this insert makes most sense as part of that system rather than as a standalone filter.

What's Included

1 × Mofage Filter Insert Black Mist 1/8

Technical Specifications

Brand: Mofage

Model: Filter Insert Black Mist 1/8

Type: Black Mist filter insert

Strength: 1/8

Compatible system: Mofage POCO adapter

Effect: Reduces highlights and overall contrast
