It suits photographers who already carry a roomy backpack or shoulder bag and want a separate layer around their equipment, rather than another bag to carry on its own. Place your gear in the Samara 170 before packing it with other belongings, so everyday movement in the larger bag is less likely to leave it scuffed or knocked. That makes it useful for commutes, day trips and keeping camera items together between outings. The title includes “Backpack,” but the supplier describes this product as a protective case or pouch; I’d think of it in that role. It’s best for basic in-bag protection, not as a claim of weatherproofing or a standalone camera-carry system. If your main concern is keeping gear from rubbing against other things while it travels in a bag you already own, this is the purpose it serves.

Specialist Note

At a station bench, you’re tucking your camera gear away before the train pulls in. I’d use the Samara 170 as a protective layer inside the larger bag you already carry: its case-or-pouch role is specifically about guarding against scratches and bumps. The black colour keeps the look understated if you prefer your camera gear not to draw attention. Ask for the Samara 170 by name when you want this particular model. It suits someone who wants that simple in-bag protection; I wouldn’t choose it on the assumption that it’s a standalone carrying system or offers weather protection.

Technical Specifications

Product name: Hama Photo Backpack SLR Samara 170 Black

Product kind: Protective case / pouch

Colour: Black

Typical use: Protecting gear against scratches and bumps in a larger bag
