It’s for people working in a home or shared darkroom who already know what they need from an enlarging lens, or who are planning a system in stages. Its clearest strength is that you can make the lens decision separately rather than buying a package that has already made it for you. That’s useful when you have a particular printing workflow in mind and want to choose the lens around it. The important practical point is simple: the enlarger arrives without a lens, so it isn’t ready to make an enlargement straight out of the box. Have a suitable enlarging lens ready for your intended work before planning a printing session. The title identifies this as the EU version.

Specialist Note

In the quiet of a darkroom, with a negative ready for a print, this Ilford earns its place as the centre of a setup you can build to your own preferences. I’d point it out to someone who wants to choose the enlarging lens rather than have one bundled in: the “w/out Lens” part means there’s one essential item to arrange separately before you can project an image for printing. Its Universal name makes it an appealing starting point for a considered darkroom setup, but I wouldn’t treat that word as a lens-compatibility promise. Match your chosen lens to the negatives you plan to print, and have it in place before you begin. It’s a focused purchase, not a complete ready-to-print kit.

Technical Specifications

Product: Ilford Universal Enlarger

Lens: Not included

Version: EU

Category: Darkroom accessory
