The 4x4 format gives the filter its other clear identity, as a square filter rather than a small round one. It suits portrait photographers, filmmakers and other image-makers who want to shape the appearance of a face or close-up subject while shooting. Soft/FX is especially relevant when you want to ease the look of fine skin detail without abandoning the overall impression of a focused image. The “2” is part of the filter’s strength designation, so this is a specific Soft/FX option, not simply an unnamed softening effect. Consider it when the character of the image matters as much as crisp detail. It’s a creative filter, not a UV filter by description.

Specialist Note

Portrait photographers working with close views of faces are the people I’d point towards this Soft/FX filter. The Soft/FX 2 designation gives you a defined version of the effect to work with; use it when you want a gentler rendering of skin detail, and judge the result in your framing rather than expecting a neutral look. Its 4x4 format is worth keeping in mind as you plan your filter setup: it’s a square filter, so the format is part of choosing how you’ll use it. For a portrait, try it on a tighter composition where the softening can be seen in the face. The honest trade-off is that this isn’t the pick when you want every fine detail rendered with a hard, clinical edge.

Technical Specifications

Brand: Tiffen

Format: 4x4

Filter designation: Soft/FX 2
