The Tiffen 44SFX3 4x4 Soft/FX3 Filter is for photographers and filmmakers who want a gentler rendering in-camera rather than relying on a softening effect in post-production. Its Soft/FX3 designation identifies it as a filter for that softer look; it’s worth considering for portraits, interview shots and other close views where faces fill much of the frame. The 4x4 format also makes it relevant to a square-filter workflow. This is a focused creative tool, not a general-purpose filter for changing exposure or colour. Choose it when you want softness to be part of the image as it’s captured, and when that look suits the subject.

Specialist Note

This filter won’t fix missed focus or make every subject look flattering; its value is in deliberately softening the rendering. The 4x4 marking tells you it’s a square-format filter, so think of it as part of a square-filter setup rather than a small screw-on filter. Soft/FX3 is the specific designation to look for when you want this Tiffen version, not just any filter with a softening effect. I’d consider it for a close portrait or a seated interview: frame the face prominently and let the filter shape the skin detail in the image itself. It suits makers who want that effect at capture, but it isn’t the right tool when crisp, clinical detail is the goal.

Technical Specifications

Brand: Tiffen

Model: 44SFX3

Filter designation: 4x4 Soft/FX3
