The Shimoda Core Unit - DSLR - XL40 RST (520-454) is a padded holster-style insert with rear, side and top access, so a camera with a lens attached can stay ready to shoot inside your pack. Its three access points are the defining feature: reach the full kit from the rear, get to the camera from the side, or open the top for a longer lens. The insert fills the main equipment compartment of the Shimoda Action X40, using its height for a substantial camera setup. It also works as part of Shimoda’s modular Core Unit system; swap to a smaller insert when a lighter kit is all you’re taking, then use this XL unit for a day with more demanding equipment. That makes it especially appealing for wildlife, sports and outdoor photography, where quick access and space for a long lens matter. Use the side opening when you need the camera promptly but want to keep the backpack on, or reach through the top when a long zoom is mounted. It’s a camera insert rather than a complete backpack, so its appeal depends on owning a compatible Shimoda pack.

Access for the action

• Rear, side and top access: Open the rear for the complete camera setup, use the side opening for a quick grab, or reach through the top for the camera and lens. The RST name refers to these three access points.
• Made for the Action X40: The unit occupies the pack’s main equipment compartment from top to bottom. It also fits the Action X50, but RST Core Units aren’t compatible with the Shimoda Explore series.
• DSLR-depth interior: The compartment accommodates mirrorless or DSLR cameras with a grip up to 15.5 cm tall. Its depth also allows lenses such as a 16–35mm f/2.8 or 24–70mm f/2.8 to stand upright.
• EVA walls and dividers: Shimoda uses EVA for the padded sides and adjustable dividers. This material allows thinner protective walls than PE foam, preserving more of the space inside the insert.
• Protective storage cover: The included cover keeps the padded unit enclosed and dust-free while it’s stored at home. It can also be packed with clothing or other items for travel.
• Large internal format: External measurements are 28 × 52 × 16.5 cm; inside, the available space measures 26 × 50 × 15.5 cm. Check the internal dimensions against the equipment you plan to carry.

What fits inside

The tall interior can take lenses up to 50 cm long, including a 600mm f/4 lens when it’s carried separately from the camera body. Several superzooms also fit attached to a camera, among them the Sony 200–600mm and 400–800mm, Nikon 180–600mm, Canon 200–800mm, Fujifilm 150–600mm and OM System 150–600mm. This capacity makes the XL format especially relevant for wildlife or field work with long glass.
