The Panasonic LUMIX G 45mm f/2.8 Leica MFT Black is an autofocus standard prime for Micro Four Thirds cameras, with a 45mm focal length and f/2.8 maximum aperture. On a Micro Four Thirds body, its framing is equivalent to 90mm on full frame: useful for a market-stall detail, a doorway or a person across a stretch of pavement, with the surroundings kept secondary. The f/2.8 maximum aperture gives you more room to work as daylight fades and can help separate your subject from the background when focus is placed carefully. This is deliberate, fairly tight framing, rather than a broad view of a room or landscape. If you enjoy choosing a subject and composing around it, this lens gives you a clear and focused way to do that on the street or while travelling.

Specialist Note

For isolating a street detail across the pavement, this lens lets you frame it without having to move right up to it. On a Micro Four Thirds body, the 90mm-equivalent view suits a shop sign or a travel portrait; take a step back and keep the background deliberate. The f/2.8 maximum aperture gives you some flexibility as the light drops. For a passing person, try 1/250 sec and raise ISO if the exposure needs it. Autofocus is handy when someone’s position or expression is changing, so you can keep your attention on composing. I’d recommend it to someone who likes selective framing, with one honest limitation: it’s a tight view for sweeping street scenes.
