Its f/1.8 maximum aperture is useful when you’re photographing under a dark sky or working in dimmer light, and the wide view suits landscapes and architecture as well as astro photography. On a Sony APS-C body, the angle of view is roughly equivalent to 25.5mm on full frame: wide enough for many interiors and sweeping views, without the exaggerated perspective of an ultra-wide full-frame lens. It’s a good fit for Sony E photographers who want one fixed-focal-length lens for open scenes, buildings and night skies. The fixed 17mm view does mean you’ll need to move to reframe, rather than zoom.
Specialist Note
Fitting a whole building or a broad stretch of sky into the frame can be awkward with a tighter view; this 17mm gives you more space to compose. On a Sony APS-C body, that works out to about 25.5mm-equivalent, so you can include plenty of a landscape while keeping a natural-looking perspective. For astro, the f/1.8 maximum aperture lets in more light than a slower setting would; I’d start there, then adjust exposure to suit the sky and your camera. It suits Sony E photographers who enjoy working with a fixed view and moving to find their framing. One caveat: it won’t give an extreme ultra-wide look on APS-C.
