Byomic Dobson Telescope Skydiver 102/640

Byomic Dobson Telescope Skydiver 102/640: Explore the Moon and night sky

A 102mm objective is the defining optical choice in the Byomic Dobson Telescope Skydiver 102/640: the aperture gathers light for views of the Moon, planets and deep-sky objects. Its 640mm focal length keeps the telescope compact, while the simple Dobson mount sits on a flat surface for observing without a separate tripod. This setup makes sense for a first telescope, and for anyone who wants a straightforward instrument to take outside when the sky is clear. There’s a broad range of targets to explore. Look at the Moon’s changing face, pick out planets, or try for nebulae and distant galaxies. The supplied 20mm and 6mm eyepieces provide 32x and 107x magnification, respectively; a 3x Barlow lens takes the upper combination to 321x. That’s a generous range from the included optics, though the lower magnification is the more useful place to begin when finding a target. A red dot finder keeps aiming simple: point the illuminated dot towards the part of the sky you’re interested in, then check the view through the eyepiece. The mount moves horizontally and vertically, and its handle is handy when carrying the telescope in or out. You get a ready-to-use combination of telescope, mount and essential viewing accessories, without a long list of extras to source separately.

What it does

• 102mm objective: The telescope’s 102mm aperture collects light for observing celestial objects. It’s the key optical figure to keep in mind when comparing this model with other beginner telescopes.
• 640mm focal length: This short focal length works with the supplied eyepieces to provide a wide range of magnifications. The 20mm eyepiece gives 32x, while the 6mm eyepiece gives 107x.
• Dobson mount: The azimuthal mount moves in horizontal and vertical directions, so you can point the telescope around the sky directly. It rests on a flat surface rather than requiring a separate tripod.
• 3x Barlow lens: Use the included Barlow with an eyepiece to increase magnification. With the 6mm eyepiece, the stated maximum is 321x; the 20mm eyepiece and Barlow combination gives 96x.
• Red dot finder: The finder provides a simple visual reference for aiming the telescope at a target. Once pointed, look through the main eyepiece to check what’s in view.
• Useful for familiar and faint targets: The supplier describes the telescope for viewing the Moon, planets, nebulae and distant galaxies. That mix gives new observers plenty to explore beyond the first look at the Moon.

Good to know

The tube measures 55cm, and the mount has a built-in handle for moving and storing the telescope. Slow-motion control is also listed, for making measured adjustments while tracking a target. The stated resolving power is 1.14 arcseconds, and its limiting magnitude is 12.8. These figures provide additional points of reference when comparing telescope specifications.
