The B+W Basic CPL MRC 46 is a circular polarizing filter: turn it to adjust reflections on non-metallic surfaces, or to deepen the appearance of a blue sky when the sun is off to one side. It’s suited to photographers who want more control over those effects while shooting landscapes, architecture or scenes near water. The “46” in the name identifies its size, so it’s intended for a lens with a matching 46 mm filter thread. A polarizer works by changing how light reaches the camera, and its effect depends on your angle to the subject and the sun. It also reduces the light reaching the camera, so allow for that when setting exposure. The title includes the MRC designation; this is the Basic CPL version.

Specialist Note

The 46 mm ring is the practical detail to match to your lens: get the size right and the filter sits where you can adjust its polarizing effect as you frame. As a CPL, this one is useful when reflections are getting between you and the subject. For water, turn the filter while watching the surface until the glare is reduced to the level you want; for a sky, work with the sun to one side rather than directly in front of or behind you. I’d suggest it to someone who often photographs landscapes, windows or water and wants to control those distractions in-camera. One trade-off: it cuts some light, so keep an eye on your exposure.

Technical Specifications

Brand: B+W

Type: CPL (circular polarizing filter)

Designation: Basic MRC

Size: 46 mm
