It’s a creative filter for photographers who want lights to become part of the composition, rather than remain small highlights. It suits evening city scenes, decorative lighting and other images where distinct lamps can add a graphic accent. You can also use it when photographing a lit subject against a darker background, making the lights part of the picture’s visual design. The 52 mm size identifies the filter diameter, so it’s relevant when matching it to a lens with a 52 mm filter thread. This isn’t a neutral-effect filter: its appeal is the treatment of point light sources. A few clear lights can define the frame; with many bright points, the star pattern may take over. Use it when that effect is part of the picture you want to make.

Specialist Note

Will the STAR-8 create an eight-point look around lights? Yes—that’s the defining idea behind the “8” in its name, giving you a clear visual motif to compose around. I’d consider it for a night street scene with separate lamps, or decorative lights behind a portrait; place those bright points where you want the rays to draw the eye. The 52 mm marking matters when pairing it with a lens: it’s the filter diameter, so the lens needs a matching 52 mm thread. It’s a distinct creative look, not one I’d use for every scene. Bring it in when the star effect helps shape the image.

Technical Specifications

Brand: Marumi

Filter type: STAR-8 DHG

Filter diameter: 52 mm
