It’s a specialist filter for photographers and filmmakers who want that look as part of the picture, rather than relying on a stronger-looking effect in post-production. The 1/2 grade gives you a specific Soft/FX option to choose when a scene calls for softened rendering; the name also identifies its 4x4 filter format. It’s particularly suited to portraits and interview shots, where a less crisp, more flattering appearance can help set the mood. Think of it as a creative effect filter, not a neutral viewing aid: it changes the image character. If you’re aiming for pin-sharp, untouched rendering throughout, this isn’t the filter to leave in place. For a deliberate soft-focus treatment, though, it offers a straightforward way to make that choice at capture.

Specialist Note

1/2 is the Soft/FX grade, so it gives you a clear, named option when you want a softened image rather than a neutral one. The 4x4 format is useful to know when you’re choosing this filter for a setup built around that size. I’d consider it for portraits or interview framing when you want faces to read with a gentler quality: select the filter for those shots, then judge the effect in the composition you’re making. It won’t suit every scene, especially if your aim is an entirely crisp, unaltered look. For a deliberate Soft/FX treatment, its specific grade makes the choice easy to communicate and repeat.

Technical Specifications

Brand: Tiffen

Product code: 44SFX12

Filter format: 4x4

Filter type: Soft/FX 1/2
