The Yongnuo YN690EX-RT Flash For Canon is a speedlight with a guide number of 60, giving you a direct source of light for events, indoor portraits and fill light in harsh sun. Its built-in radio transmitter and receiver work with the Canon RT radio system, so the flash can be used on-camera or as part of a wireless setup. You can also use it as the controller for Yongnuo and Canon RT flashes, adjusting remote flash modes and output from the YN690EX-RT. For portraits indoors, TTL flash metering takes care of exposure adjustments as the scene changes; for a group or event, radio control lets you position compatible flashes away from the camera. In bright daylight, its stated output makes it a capable option for adding fill to a subject. This is a feature-rich Canon-compatible flash, with both radio and optical wireless transmission available, plus a rechargeable lithium battery. It’s a useful mix for anyone who needs more than a simple on-camera flash, particularly when their lighting setup has to move between solo portraits and busy events.

How it lights

TTL, manual and multi flash modes: Choose TTL for metered flash exposure, M for direct manual control, or Multi for repeated flashes during one exposure. Its radio system reaches up to 100 metres and works with the Canon RT system. In a compatible wireless setup, the YN690EX-RT can control Yongnuo or Canon RT flash units, or receive their radio signals as a remote flash.

Specialist Note

“Can the Yongnuo YN690EX-RT control a flash away from the camera?” Yes: it can act as the radio controller for Yongnuo and Canon RT units, with remote mode and output control. That’s handy for an indoor portrait where you want the light coming from beside the camera rather than directly from the hot shoe; use TTL for metered exposure, then adjust the remote flash from the controller. The GR mode is also worth knowing about when you’re arranging more than one group of flashes, because it supports group-based control. I’d point event shooters and portrait photographers with an RT setup toward this model. Just bear in mind that its radio control is for the named RT system, so it isn’t a universal radio trigger for every flash.

What's Included

Yongnuo YN690EX-RT Flash For Canon

Technical Specifications

Brand: Yongnuo

Model: YN690EX-RT

Type: Speedlight flash

Flash modes: TTL, M, Multi, GR

Battery: LB-E1 rechargeable lithium battery, 2000 mAh

Maximum flashes: Approximately 600 at full power

Recycle time: Approximately 1 second

Guide number: 60

Radio transmission range: Up to 100 m

Optical transmission range: 20–25 m indoors; 10–15 m outdoors

Dimensions: 64 × 80 × 205 mm

Weight: 447 g
