B+W 501 ND Gradient Filter 50% F-PRO - 55mm
B+W 501 ND Gradient Filter 50% F-PRO - 55mm | Balance bright skies and foregrounds
Bring a bright sky and a darker foreground closer to the same exposure with a graduated neutral-density filter. The B+W 501 ND Gradient Filter 50% F-PRO - 55mm reduces light across part of the frame, helping you retain sky detail without letting the land or buildings fall too dark. Its 50% light transmission means a one-stop reduction in the filtered area. That makes it useful for landscapes and city views where the difference in brightness is noticeable but a measured adjustment is all you need. The graduated effect lets you position the reduction where the brightness is, rather than darkening the whole image equally. It suits photographers who want to manage contrast at the point of capture, especially when a bright sky shares the frame with a less brightly lit scene. The 55mm size is the key fitting detail: match it to the filter size on your lens.
Specialist Note
"The 55mm diameter is the practical detail to check first: it’s made for a lens with a matching filter size, so the filter sits in the right place in your setup. The 50% reduction gives you one stop to work with. For a landscape, position the darker part over the bright sky; at the same aperture and ISO, a one-stop exposure change is equivalent to moving from 1/250s to 1/125s. It’s a measured correction, rather than a way to tame a sky that’s several stops brighter than the foreground. I’d consider it for scenes where a single stop is enough."
