Caruba Hot Shoe Cover HC-4A (For Canon SLR) | Trigger off-camera flash

Portraits and product shots can gain more controlled light when you fire a flash away from the camera. The Caruba Hot Shoe Cover HC-4A is a flash trigger and transmitter for that job, intended for use with Canon SLR cameras. It suits photographers who want to position an off-camera flash separately rather than rely on light from the camera position. For a portrait, that lets you place the flash to the side of your subject; for a small product, you can direct the light from a different angle to show its shape more clearly. The HC-4A sends the trigger to fire the off-camera flash, so you can concentrate on where the light should fall. It’s a focused accessory for these setups, rather than a flash itself: you’ll need an off-camera flash to create the light.

Specialist Note

The Caruba Hot Shoe Cover HC-4A is best at triggering an off-camera flash for portraits and product photography. Its role as a transmitter means you can work with the flash away from the camera, which is handy when you want light coming from the side instead of straight from your shooting position. The product is specified for Canon SLR cameras, so it’s aimed at photographers using that system. For a portrait, place your flash off to one side and use the HC-4A to fire it; for a product, shift the light to reveal its contours. One point to keep in mind: this is the trigger, not the light source, so it pairs with an off-camera flash.
