Formatt Hitech 85x85mm (3.35x3.35) ND 1.5 (5stops) | Slow the shutter by five stops

This square neutral density filter is defined by its fixed five-stop light reduction: enough to make slower shutter speeds practical in daylight, without changing the scene you’re composing. It suits photographers who want to show movement in water or clouds, or who need to keep a chosen aperture in bright conditions. The 85 x 85 mm format gives you a square filter to position in a compatible filter holder; the filter size alone doesn’t tell you which holder it fits, so don’t assume a match based on the number alone. For a long-exposure landscape, meter the scene without the filter, then lengthen the shutter time by five stops after fitting it. That can turn a fast exposure into a visibly slower one. It’s also a straightforward way to explore motion blur without changing your framing. The density is fixed, so the effect is predictable, though very long exposures in bright light may call for more light reduction.

Specialist Note

New ND users often expect a five-stop filter to create a very long exposure in every daylight scene; it’s the starting shutter speed that decides how far you’ll get. This one cuts the light by five stops, so a metered 1/250 sec exposure becomes about 1/8 sec. That’s a useful range for softening a stream or giving moving clouds a little blur: compose and meter first, then add the filter and extend the exposure. The 85 x 85 mm square format is intended for a compatible holder, so make sure the holder accepts that size. For extremely long daylight exposures, its fixed five-stop strength may not be enough on its own.
