Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 105mm ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 105mm ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter | Four stops less light for longer exposures
The defining choice is the 105mm filter format, paired with an ND 1.2 density that cuts the light by four stops. That gives you a fixed, predictable reduction when the scene is brighter than the exposure you want. This Formatt Hitech Firecrest filter suits photographers whose setup is designed for a 105mm filter and who want to make longer exposures in daylight or use a wider aperture without changing the light itself. Four stops means one sixteenth of the light reaches the camera, so a shutter speed of 1/125 sec can become roughly 1/8 sec at the same exposure. That’s enough to soften moving water or blur passing clouds, depending on the scene. It’s a focused tool rather than a variable filter: the reduction stays at four stops, so you’ll need to adjust your exposure around that fixed amount.
Specialist Note
On a bright afternoon, the water in a canal can look almost still at a fast shutter speed. This filter’s ND 1.2 density cuts four stops, so 1/125 sec becomes about 1/8 sec without changing the scene’s brightness in the final exposure; that’s a good starting point for bringing movement into the water. The 105mm format matters too: it’s for photographers whose filter setup is made for that size, so check your kit’s filter format before planning around it. I’d consider it for deliberate daylight long exposures or for opening the aperture in strong light. One limit is that four stops is a set amount, not something you can dial up or down.
