Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 39mm ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 39mm ND 1.2 (4stops) Filter | Slow the shutter by four stops
The defining choice here is the 39mm diameter: it gives this filter a specific size for lenses with a matching filter thread. Its ND 1.2 rating reduces the light reaching the camera by four stops, making it useful when you want a slower shutter speed without changing the scene’s lighting. That can help show movement in water or clouds, or let you use a wider aperture in bright conditions. It suits photographers whose lens takes a 39mm filter and who want a fixed, four-stop reduction rather than a variable adjustment. For example, a metered exposure of 1/30 sec becomes roughly 1/2 sec when you keep the aperture and ISO unchanged. It’s a straightforward way to make that exposure shift; the key is planning around the filter’s fixed strength.
Specialist Note
Late-afternoon light runs across a canal, and a four-stop reduction gives you room to let the water blur instead of freezing every ripple. If your meter calls for 1/30 sec, keep the aperture and ISO where they are and the ND 1.2 takes you to about 1/2 sec. The 39mm size matters just as much in practice: it’s for a lens with a matching 39mm filter thread, so check the marking on the lens before choosing it. I’d point this filter towards someone who wants deliberate slow-shutter work with that lens size. Its fixed four stops are a strong reduction; in dim light, you may need to open the aperture or raise ISO.
