Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 39mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 39mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter | Eight stops for longer exposures
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 39mm ND 2.4 (8stops) Filter reduces the light reaching your camera by eight stops, giving you room to use a slower shutter speed in bright conditions. It’s made for photographers who want to control how motion appears in a frame, especially when daylight would otherwise force a faster exposure. Think flowing water rendered with a softer blur, or movement given a little more time in the frame. The same light reduction can also help you keep a wider aperture outdoors when you want to work with a particular depth of field. Its fixed ND strength makes it a straightforward tool: choose it when an eight-stop reduction suits the scene, rather than when you need to vary the density from frame to frame. This 39mm filter is for a lens with a matching filter size.
Specialist Note
With this filter in place, bright scenes give you much more room to lengthen the exposure. The ND 2.4 density is the key here: it cuts the light by eight stops, so an exposure of 1/125 sec can become roughly 2 sec if you keep the aperture and lighting unchanged. That’s a practical starting point for softening the movement of water; adjust from there to suit the scene. The 39mm size means you’ll need a lens with that same filter diameter. I’d recommend it to someone who already knows they want a strong, fixed reduction for daylight work. It won’t let you dial in a different density, so it pairs best with a clear exposure plan.
