Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 49mm ND 1.8 (6stops) Filter
Formatt Hitech Firecrest ND 49mm ND 1.8 (6stops) Filter | Six stops for longer exposures
Without an ND filter, a bright scene can force you to use a faster shutter speed than you want. This Formatt Hitech Firecrest is a neutral-density filter that reduces the light entering the lens by six stops, giving you room to choose a slower shutter speed while keeping your chosen aperture and ISO. It suits photographers working with moving water, clouds or traffic who want motion to show in the frame, rather than freeze completely. It’s also useful when you want to keep a wider aperture in bright conditions. The 49mm size is for a lens with a matching 49mm filter thread. Its strength is straightforward: six stops of light reduction, without needing to change your framing or rely on software to create blur later. If your lens takes a different filter size, this isn’t the right fit.
Specialist Note
“Will this 49mm Firecrest give me a slower shutter speed in daylight?” Yes: its ND 1.8 rating cuts six stops of light, so you can make a much longer exposure while holding aperture and ISO steady. As a practical example, if your meter suggests 1/125 sec without the filter, six stops takes you to about 1/2 sec. That’s a useful range for giving a small waterfall visible movement or softening passing traffic. I’d steer it toward someone who already knows their lens has a 49mm thread and wants that specific six-stop reduction. One limit: a six-stop filter can’t blur a subject that isn’t moving.
